What is Curiosity-Driven Design?

Creativity

Curiosity is an often overlooked value that serves as the foundation of creativity. Since birth, it drives our natural learning process by attracting us to new things and keeping us engaged long enough to understand such things works. We want to harness that curiosity and thoughtfully apply it to find new solutions problems, both old and new. This means that we need to be willing to dig deeply into a topic to understand why certain solutions were used in the past and determine if any improvement is possible.

WE KEEP MOVING FORWARD, OPENING NEW DOORS, AND DOING NEW THINGS, BECAUSE WE’RE CURIOUS AND CURIOSITY KEEPS LEADING US DOWN NEW PATHS
— Walt Disney

To improve the current state of the world, we need to be courageous in trying new things while striking a balance between the old and the new, selectively utilizing what came before to reach new heights.

The Importance of Responsibility

Being responsible means being aware that our actions have an impact on the world around us. By doing our craft responsibly, we allow ourselves to take sufficient time to successfully complete each step of the design process and avoid long-lasting problems during the building's life. Responsible design generates quality results.

Purpose and Context

No two living organism are exactly the same. Species evolve to adapt to certain contexts. They develop qualities that take advantage of their specific environments allowing them to thrive. Buildings should be conceived the same way. No context is exactly the same. The exact combination of building codes, weather conditions, constructive systems, culture, terrain, and function will always be unique. Possible combinations are endless, so we should never adopt a one-size-fits-all approach. A symbiotic relationship between a building and its context provides longevity to the project and a positive return on the investment.
